8 Essential Tips for Custom Screen Printing on Promotional Apparel

Paul watson November 20, 2023

Screen printing is a process used to transfer an image onto fabric by applying ink through a mesh stencil that is stretched over a frame. It’s an ideal method for creating custom uniforms, logo shirts, and virtually any type of promotional shirt. If you’re new to custom screen printing, here are several important things to know before you start your project.

1. Choose a Clear, High-Quality Image for Your Custom Screen Printing

It might be tempting to use a picture found online, but images from the internet often don’t transfer well due to low resolution. When selecting artwork for screen printing, make sure to avoid designs with small gaps or fine details that could cause ink to bleed or distort. Opt for images that are crisp, large, and high-resolution to ensure the best outcome. If you’re unsure about the quality or transferability of your design, a skilled screen printer can help adjust or refine the artwork to make it suitable for printing. Discuss your ideas with the printer to explore possible solutions if your initial design doesn’t meet the printing requirements.

2. Be Ready to Adapt and Stay Flexible

When you bring your design to a custom screen printer, they may suggest changes such as adjusting the font size or altering the colors of your image. This is because certain colors may not transfer well onto fabric, or the design might look better with slight modifications. For instance, a particular color may not show up as effectively on dark fabric. If you’re set on a specific color that the printer advises against, you may need to consider an alternative. Trust the printer’s expertise—they want your shirts to look great just as much as you do.

3. Consider the Type and Style of Fabric

Think about the kind of fabric you’re printing on before proceeding with your custom screen printing project. Jersey cotton, the material commonly used for T-shirts, sweatshirts, and jerseys, is one of the easiest fabrics to work with for screen printing. Additionally, consider where you want your design placed on the fabric. Screen printing can be done on various parts of the item—whether it’s the front, back, or even an all-over print. If you’re designing a full custom piece, sketch out your ideas beforehand so you have a clear vision of where the design should be placed.

4. Select the Right Shirt Color

The color of the shirts you choose can greatly affect how your design looks when printed. For example, if you’re designing shirts for a children’s baseball team, you may want to pick darker colors to hide stains. On the other hand, if you’re planning a company picnic in hot weather, light-colored shirts are a better option to help keep everyone cool. Be sure to also consider the color of the design you’re printing and how it will contrast with the color of the fabric. Discuss with your screen printer to choose the best combination of shirt and design colors to ensure the final product looks its best.

5. Know How Many Shirts You Need

Having an accurate estimate of how many shirts you need is crucial when placing an order for custom screen printing. The number of shirts will directly influence the quote you receive from the printing company, as shirts are priced individually based on quantity. Make sure to take a headcount or collect orders from those who need shirts before submitting your order. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to order a few extra shirts rather than risk not having enough.

6. Allow Time for the Printing Process

Custom screen printing requires time to ensure quality results. A new screen needs to be created for each order, and since your shirts are being customized, it could take anywhere from a few days to a week to complete your order. Plan ahead and avoid rushing the process. Giving the printer enough time will allow them to perform the necessary steps to create high-quality, professional prints that meet your expectations.

7. Consider Adding Embroidery

In addition to screen printing, you can also add embroidery, monograms, or appliqués to your custom apparel. If you’ve ordered screen-printed T-shirts, consider adding embroidered details like a company logo or individual initials on the sleeves. Matching totes or bags can also be embroidered with your company’s logo or other custom designs to complement the screen-printed shirts. As with screen printing, it’s important to know exactly what you want and bring in samples of artwork to discuss with your printer.

8. Review the Proof Carefully

Before your order goes into full production, the printer will provide a proof of the design. This proof is the final draft of how your custom shirts will look, so it’s important to review it thoroughly. Make sure the design, colors, and layout align with what you had envisioned. If anything seems off, it’s the perfect time to make adjustments before the screen printing process begins. Once you approve the proof, the artists will use it to create your custom shirts.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can ensure that your custom screen-printed promotional apparel is high-quality and effectively showcases your brand or event. Whether you’re ordering for a corporate function, sports team, or special occasion, understanding the intricacies of the screen printing process will help you make informed decisions and achieve the best possible outcome.
